- Function: It helps in diagnosing conditions such as ear infections, earwax buildup, fluid behind the eardrum, and eardrum perforations.
- Components: It generally features a light source (often LED or halogen), a magnifying lens (typically 3x magnification), and a removable/disposable speculum (earpiece).
- Types: Otoscopes can be traditional optical devices, or digital versions that can connect to a smartphone or monitor to capture images and video.
Ophthalmoscope Overview
An ophthalmoscope is a tool used for direct examination (fundoscopy) of the internal structures at the back of the eye.
- Function: It allows visualization of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels to help detect conditions like glaucoma, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, high blood pressure effects, and diabetic retinopathy.
- Components: It includes a light source, a set of mirrors, and a diopter wheel with multiple corrective lenses to adjust focus.
- Types: Coaxial ophthalmoscopes are a popular, advanced version that offers a broader field of view and minimizes glare compared to standard models.
